Dexamenes date back to the early 1900s, when the concrete tanks were built on the coastline, for wine fermentation and export overseas. The conversion of the site into a hotel intended to showcase the raw beauty of the existing buildings and highlight their brutality with elegant interventions. A complimentary palette of concrete, steel, timber and glass leaves the existing buildings relatively untouched.
Beneath the canopy of the reception pavilion remnants of the industrial past are artfully displayed alongside the hotel boutique. The space opens onto a peaceful courtyard, where 2concrete blocks of tanks are now converted into 4 neat rows of deceptively luxurious rooms. Courtyard-facing rooms are laid out to create privacy while beachfront rooms maximize sea-view. Among the blocks a shallow pool reflects light and sound onto the surfaces of the steel drums sitting in the water.
2original stone buildings now provide the hotel with in-house dining and facilities for art and food focused events that communicate the culture of the area and the history of the site. The hotel has an ongoing program of arts events, with resident artists presenting works throughout the summer season.
