Ideally situated at the mouth of Somes Sound with easy access to Acadia National Park, The Claremont reopened in May 2021, following an extensive transformation and under new ownership. One of Mount Desert Island’s most historic hotels, the six-acre shorefront property has provided a classic summer refuge to visitors seeking a quiet coastal respite dating back to 1884. The magnificent location for The Claremont Hotel was chosen by a retired sea captain, Jesse Pease after he made his last cargo run of sugar and molasses from Portland, Maine to New York in 1883.

The reimagined hotel boasts a total of 51 accommodations, including 12 cottages, four suites, a secluded three-bedroom waterfront haven, 34 guestrooms, an intimate spa, a heated swimming pool overlooking the Sound, four food and beverage venues, an expansive garden, a croquet club and more. Fabrics by Morris & Co and wallpapers by Sister Parish, the hotel’s maximalism design is inspired by the hotel’s surroundings of the edge of the ocean and Acadia’s mountains. Cruiser bikes, a croquet court, yoga on the lawn, pool cabanas, boat charters, golf cart rentals, nature hikes, as well as stay enhancements are all also offered.
