The brief was to design a restaurant for Joost Bakker who is an eco-entrepreneur. The site is in Marrickville, a multi-cultural area and one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Sydney.
The restaurant is a Korean inspired Australian restaurant because there is a lot of common ground between Joost's philosophy and traditional Korean culture. From sourcing their own food, using sustainable materials for construction and use of basic materials such as straws and timber.
The design takes many elements of Hanok, traditional Korean house. Using structures that fit together rather than using nails to hold it into place. I hope you take the time to appreciate the ingenuity and the simplicity of this construction method that people in Korea have been using for thousands of years.
The restaurant features an outdoor garden picnic area, onsite gardens where you can grow your own ingredients and also a natural dye workshop space.
The restaurant gives people an opportunity to learn about what is better for the environment and the future through this unique dining experience.
