This jungle retreat, located on the Samana Peninsula on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic, is carefully inserted into the local topography.
The precise locations and elevations of the shared and private spaces that comprise the facility are adjusted to follow the grade of the mountain as it descends towards the beach.
The use of vernacular materials and construction techniques emphasizes the project´s embedded condition in its site.
In the resort, a sequence of open spaces promotes the flow of air and the introduction of light, while the private bungalows are placed to ensure maximum seclusion nevertheless preserving a connection with the grounds.
The resort’s commitment to sustainability and community integration extends to its use of locally sourced materials. For example, the locally sourced marble from nearby quarries not only adds a touch of elegance to the architecture but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. By collaborating with local communities for material sourcing and execution, the resort not only supports the regional economy but also fosters a sense of pride and ownership among residents.
