Huihui, a new beachfront restaurant and bar, is a “house without walls” experience with outdoor and indoor terrace dining in ascending levels providing unmatched views for all patrons.
Huihui, meaning “star constellation” or “to join, intermingle, mix”, is a modern interpretation of traditional Hawaiian influences, and helps tell the story of voyaging that is part of the resort’s renowned Po’okela program. Various elements incorporated into the design aid this goal including the artwork, TV display wall, etched-glass sails at the back-bar, night sky inspired lighting plan, and the star-compass patterned performance stage.
There is an intentional lightness of being with the building floating above the landscape to lesson its impact and create a canoe hale underneath. The building setting, orientation, shape and proportions are a careful balance between programmatic requirements, view impacts to guestrooms, and government requirements. The dark color palette allows the building to recede rather than impose and reduce ocean view sun glare. Seven-foot overhangs foster a sense of enclosure while providing respite from the elements.
