Due to its prominent situation on Fleetinsel island between the harbour & Alster canal, the Steigenberger Hotel Hamburg has been a luxurious ‘safe harbour’ since the 1990s. The designers reinvented their own decade-old concept for the rebranded venue ‘Restaurant am Fleet’. Previously named ‘Restaurant Calla’, the graceful calla lily inspired the original design’s textured stucco ripples inset within the walls. Now, the kernel of the new design has changed to ‘the pearl’, Hamburg’s nickname, to strengthen the sense of place & provide a segue linking the initial concept with the new one. White finishes with subtly shimmering lustre allude to the pearl, while fluid organic shapes take on a different dimension by recalling pearl age rings & the waves of the passing fleet. The restaurant’s original stucco wall feature is honoured with sinuous light strands newly embedded in the walls & ceiling. A room divider made from flowing metal ‘ribbons’ includes curves that create vantage points looking beyond the screen. Muted tone-on-tone colours create a tranquil ambience that encourages hotel guests & locals to relax & recharge their batteries for their next adventures in the Hanseatic city.
