The west coast debut of Austin-based Japanese restaurant Uchi explores the intersection of Los Angeles and Japanese design sensibilities, craft traditions and biophilia through the brilliance of community to create a multi-sensory dining experience.
Wabi Sabi - the idea of finding beauty in the imperfections - is evident in the design concept which is defined by two rows of suspended live-edge timber slabs reclaimed from twenty-five fallen street trees, representing fourteen unique LA neighborhoods.
The rustic timbers are balanced with the understated aesthetic of natural materials; plaster, stone, hand-made local tiles, and custom concrete planters that pull the landscape deep inside.
Bespoke shelving and banquettes convey the simplicity and characteristics of Japanese craft traditions. Several works of art from LA artists and makers create unique moments of interest and engagement.
Through incorporating LA’s diverse cultural tapestry and ecological richness, the design elevates humble materials through impeccable craftsmanship, celebrating local artistry, craft, designers and makers to create a sense of surprise and connection to LA’s unexpected natural beauty and spirit.
