A house cannot exist without a physical, abstract, and poetic connection to the sky. This residence was designed with the mission of living with the sky. Traditional machiya homes incorporate a central garden, bringing nature into daily life and nurturing a unique aesthetic and respect for nature. This house adopts that wisdom. The building spans a narrow plot, with a courtyard at its center. Rooms and corridors surround the courtyard, connecting all spaces and creating a home that feels like a single room centered on the sky.Windows facing outward are limited, with most opening towards the courtyard. Upon entering, visitors are led through a dark, narrow corridor to the bright courtyard. As they reach it, the open sky welcomes them. Light and wind flow gently through the house, while shifting light and shadow, changing with the seasons and time, enhance the sense of nature's richness.
Rooms across the courtyard offer a balance of connection and privacy. The courtyard itself serves as both a room and a passageway, offering flexible uses that make the space feel larger than its actual size.
