SHH was commissioned to design a Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant in Beijing’s Chaoyang District. The brief called for a design that would narrate a cohesive story through the guest’s journey, incorporating traditional architectural elements which enrich the dining experience. From arrival to departure, the space is designed to engage guests by creating a memorable and immersive environment that reflects the cultural depth and culinary sophistication of Cantonese cuisine. The design intent is to provide dining spaces suitable for the use of general guests alongside private and VIP dining spaces for business lunches and special events. The restaurant configuration incorporates spatial and material elements that are found in the traditional Lingnan-style architecture of South China, reinterpreted in contemporary ways: a central “courtyard” dining area is surrounded by a series of private dining spaces, and incorporating further architectural elements like gateways, thresholds, porches and connecting alleyways. To capture the essence of the culinary journey, the CGI visuals guide viewers through distinct dining environments.
