This custom home was designed for a parent and three children in a quiet suburb about an hour from central Tokyo. Located near a busy road, the design emphasizes both privacy and symbolic aesthetics. The residence is composed of three volumes separated by walls, creating a rhythmic facade. These volumes are enclosed by boundary walls and a gate that form a light-filled buffer zone, softly linking the interior and exterior. By varying wall heights according to surrounding views, the design ensures sunlight while maintaining privacy. Japan’s strict height restrictions were turned into an advantage, resulting in a refined and distinctive facade. A row of black bamboo along the entrance path, lit upward, evokes classical Japanese elegance. The outer walls are finished with siding panels featuring deep shadow lines. The first floor is an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area connected to a courtyard terrace. The second floor houses three children’s rooms and a split-level guest room, whose upper level features tatami flooring with modern Japanese detailing. The master bedroom on the third floor, defined by a sloped ceiling, offers a serene and expressive private retreat.
