Guanyi Hotel is situated in Maoping Village, Tonglu. This design leverages the existing main structure of the building, aiming to create a resort hotel deeply rooted in local heritage.
The existing building features a complete yet massive volume, which is incompatible with the surrounding natural context. Therefore, the core design propositions focus on "volume dissolution" and "localization". After systematically mapping out the architectural structure, we introduced "village" as the core design concept and adopted a volume combination of "base + box". This allows the building to take shape as "small units placed on the base" — a design that not only eliminates the sense of oppression from the large volume but also accurately echoes the original architectural form of traditional villages in Tonglu.
The concept of sustainability is implemented throughout the design process. Local craftsmen and materials are prioritized, and renewable and eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, wood, and stone are selected as the main building materials. Through the textural expression of these natural materials, the symbiotic dialogue between the building, the mountains and the villages is deepened.
