JUMBA NUNGWI, Zanzibar, Tanzania
JUMBA NUNGWI is a balanced, sustainable, and immersive hospitality project on Zanzibar, Tanzania. The site is divided into two zones: the oceanfront, with the main hotel building, pools, and public spaces; and a private area with cozy villas, set in lush greenery to ensure comfort and seclusion.
The architecture draws inspiration from local vernacular huts, using soft forms, warm terracotta, and natural textures. A key innovation is the second façade system. This feature filters sunlight and optimizes airflow, preventing overheating and ensuring natural ventilation. It guarantees a stable microclimate and high thermal comfort in the humid tropical setting.
The design integrates traditional principles into a contemporary language, ergonomics define the project: simple maintenance, safety, and optimized spatial layouts shape both hotel and villas.
JUMBA NUNGWI creates investor value via a hybrid model (hotel+ residences+villas), diversifying revenue and reducing risk. It supports local employment, respects cultural identity, and aids Zanzibar's sustainable development, proving architecture serves economy, society, and environment simultaneously.
