The Borelli castle restoration project introduces a completely new and innovative element to the system: the collective and public nature of the access space. Drawing inspiration from the deep historical roots of the “Ligurian village,” the project suggests the creation of a plaza as a new focal point for the functions introduced. After years of neglect and decay, Borelli castle abandons its ancient role as a private space, isolated within the solitude of its walls and embodying the eclectic architectural tastes of a prominent historical figure. So now it became a new public space. For this reason, the project incorporates a mix of uses designed to offer the right balance between public life (openness, social interaction, cultural events) and private needs (privacy, daily life).
The project seeks a constant dialogue between ancient and past, with a decomposition of volumes on a technological backdrop in stave and glass in antithesis to the crenellated walls and towers of the castle. The new building observes the sea and blends into the greenery, hides between the walls and reveals itself to the observer who reaches and enters the complex.
