Karma Hakuba is a 1,600 sqm, 20-key boutique ski resort set at the foothill of the Hakuba mountains, where village, slope, and leisure converge. Conceived as a stepped, geological form, the architecture behaves as a constructed landscape, negotiating between arrival and exposure by framing the entry condition while opening incrementally toward the alpine terrain through a sequence of recessed terraces and balconies. Guest uses are consolidated within a concrete groundform that anchors the project to the site and accommodates shared leisure and wellness spaces, extending outward into communal terraces organized around an open bar, fire pits, and embedded jacuzzis, functioning as an active ski base by day and a social retreat by night. Wrapped in standing-seam metal that registers shifting light and season, and softened within by warm Japanese wood interiors, the project balances monumentality and intimacy, positioning the resort as a contemporary alpine resort calibrated to sport, climate, and seasonal occupation.
