Situated on the southernmost tip of the Raa Atoll, this is InterContinental Hotels & Resorts’ first property in the Maldives. Unlike typical Maldivian resort layouts, the master plan puts the back-of-house off centre on the island to return valuable real estate back to the Beach Villas, giving expansive private gardens that lead to the beach. To achieve the one-of-its-kind two-storey Lagoon Villas that combine overwater views with direct beach and lagoon access, 3 islets were reclaimed to create this unique site condition. Boardwalks then lead from the lagoon to the Overwater Villas. Guests are offered different experiences in the resort with highlights such as the jetty doubling up as a seafood destination and creating an “isolated” lighthouse that serves Mediterranean cuisine. Throughout the resort architecture, pared-down, localised elements are the essence. Off-form and subtly textured concrete finishes paired with timber log columns. Modern Nako louvres introduced as a response for natural light and ventilation control. For this resort we sought to not let luxury be defined by opulence and glitter but with honesty and authenticity for a timeless resort property.

Bio
The premise of eco.id, a multidisciplinary practice founded in 1996, is a modern and progressive approach to design. The firm’s comprehensive suite of services range from master planning and architecture to interior design and branding, and project typologies that span high-rise luxury condominiums and detached dwellings to retail boutiques, hotels and resorts. Regardless of scale, the emphasis is always on balancing aesthetics with rigour, and program with budget.
