The St. Regis Bermuda Resort provides guests with five-star luxury accommodations within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fort St Catherine. Located in Achilles Bay, the resort blends the island's elegant living style while preserving the site’s historical elements.
Envisioned as a gentle arch sitting between Fort St Catherine and Fort Albert, the features required repositioning to access the museum and beach while cohabiting and preserving the site. The sensitive and slender site challenged architects to make the most of the area and create a flexible design.
The resort’s positioning warranted special archeological reports and meetings, and the architectural plan streamlined this process while fully protecting the historical elements. Taking on a project with such unique pieces meant finishing this resort was more than a hotel design alone; it required a master plan involving developer, community, and government.
The climactic complexities of Bermuda require a design team that knows the island. All aspects were considered to reduce the disturbance to the natural environment through minimizing the footprint of the building and excavation and keeping the drainage sustainable.
