Located on Lake Michigan, this 6,000 square-foot lakehouse is designed for its spectacular views and natural setting. The lakeside facade is nearly all glass with fluid indoor-outdoor space, capturing light from sunrise to sunset. The streetside is clad in wood to mimic the wooded landscape.
The approach to the house is a series of zen moments that quietly crescendo. A wood screen with slats at subtle angles separates the public side from the inner courtyard where the focus turns to a small tree. Behind is a wall of narrow bricks that signal a change of seasons when snow collects on the outcrops. The all-glass entry reveals a breathtaking lake horizon.
Hosting multi generations, the design accommodates modern living. The second floor features a gallery where clerestory windows provide diffuse light for artwork. The third floor, fondly known as the treehouse, captures a large cottonwood tree in full view.
From the outdoor patio, a footpath winds its way to a beach box–an upcycled shipping container clad in wood. The container is set into the hill where it disappears from the view above, and the house similarly is hidden from view in the grasses and trees from the beach below.
