Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is an adult-only nature retreat and features 15 luxury tents overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Naviva celebrates the intrinsic bond that humans have with nature through biophilic design–an architectural approach that connects people to their natural surroundings. The entire resort experience emphasizes indoor and outdoor living, providing a distinct narrative that focuses on nature, place, and culture. Naviva was constructed with alternative building materials to create an innovative, hybrid architecture, including copper shingles, laminated bamboo arches, and nature-inspired patterns on high-performance canvas. While not an obvious combination, the resulting balance that was achieved is nothing short of spectacular. In designing the interior spaces, the firm aimed to collaborate with local suppliers and manufacturers. This not only supported local businesses but also gave insight into local traditions and materials used in Mexican culture. All building forms, interior designs, and guest narratives can be tied back to a form or natural phenomenon found in the surrounding context—thus, creating a design concept that is fully derived from nature.
