The updated design of this mid-century office building maintains its original integrity while transitioning its function to a 40-unit residential complex. Responding to the outdoor-focused lifestyle of southern California, units maximize connections to the outdoors and opportunities to move between indoor and outdoor spaces. The revised design maintains the original concrete balconies while increasing the amount of glazing through the building.

Tactile door handles – made of bronze wrapped in leather and crafted by hand – were custom designed for the building’s residential units. Within the units, the interior design approach prioritizes warm, natural materials. Travertine, nodding to the geology of the area, features as flooring and wall tile, complemented by bronze accent walls that will patina over time. At the penthouse level, a Vitrocsa curtainwall glazing system creates large areas of dramatic transparency, essentially removing the boundary between inside and outside spaces.
