A fishing village - a place for togetherness
A two-hour drive to the west of Haiko on the tropical island of Hainan, China, an abandoned fishing village awaits revitalization into a boutique hotel and beach destination. At the village's harbor, a stone barrier served as a fish farm and will be used as a tidal pool for the hotel. The remaining old fishermen's cabins built from local lava stone will be preserved and transformed into various hotel villa typologies. A newly built restaurant by the beach, a café that serves as a viewing platform, and a lighthouse bookstore will serve the boutique hotel.
Approach: 1.) Preserving the elemental characteristics of the village 2.) Introducing new functions at the appropriate scale 3.) Transforming the existing into contemporary vernacular architecture 4.) Crafting a unique experience authentic to its surroundings 5.) Enhancing the existing natural environment 6.) Introducing meaningful activities to an abandoned place 7.) Turning a place of hardship into an area of leisure 8.) Branding a unique destination 9.) Generating a new way of growth driving commercial success 10) Creating a place for togetherness
It is how we produce future culture!
