A remote family cabin, situated on the doorstep of the vast Canadian Algonquin Provincial Park. In summer it operates as an escape from the city’s heat, and in winter as a warm refuge after cross-country ski outings.
As a playful juxtaposition & adding to a hamlet sensibility, the cabin is identified in a salt & pepper palette —the old white & the new in a dark stain.
The old hunting cabin houses the living & eating areas. Drama was added by carving out light & air intakes in high & low places and exposing the lofty roof members of the existing cabin. In the new wing, which holds the quiet spaces of bedrooms, washrooms and study, this pattern is continued, forging a link between the old & new.
The dappled light of the tree canopies is accentuated through wooden screens, which also filter the bright light of winter.
As the cabin sits at the base of a wooded hillside, a bridge from the 2nd floor master bedroom gives direct access to the forest & outdoor shower, anchoring the building to the site’s changing topography.
A lofty screen porch floats over the water’s edge allowing commanding views while capturing breezes off the lake which are carefully funnelled through the building.
