Nestled within leafy Chanakyapuri in New Delhi, the flagship centre for Lifeyoga facilitates a calming, uplifting experience that is reflective of inner journey of the practitioners of this ancient science.
Three levels, each characterised by a play of scale, volume, and light, correspond to the brief’s diverse programmatic needs. The basement with its naturally lower light becomes an ideal space for studios that facilitate slower, deeper, more meditative practices. The main yoga studio located on the upper floor, conceptualised as a conservatory in response to development control regulations, hosts high-intensity sessions and hot yoga classes. The hot yoga panels double up as baffles to diffuse light entering from overhead skylights, creating an evenly lit space.
Expressed through a vocabulary of warm neutrals and earthy tones, the material palette is intentionally tactile, spartan and evocative. Wax-finished ivory walls plastered with a mix of PoP and cow dung, impart an even inconsistency. Mandana red sandstone and custom-built woodwork in local kikar (acacia) bring warmth. Subtle details like the ergonomic hand-carved door handles add softness to an otherwise sparse space.
