Appointed to deliver the interior design for Mediterranean restaurant group Claro’s first international opening in St James’s, London, the brief was to evolve the existing concept to suit a UK audience while respecting the site’s heritage. Set within a Grade II listed former banking hall and once the Athenaeum Club, the design celebrates the building’s grandeur, combining Clubland elegance with a progressive, immersive dining experience.
A central open kitchen, double-height main dining area, and intimate mezzanine with private spaces encourage interaction and culinary engagement. Whilst elements of the original building have been preserved, such as the stunning wrought iron handrail or ceiling mouldings, tremendous pendent lights that hang proudly from the high ceilings and beautiful pieces of furniture in rich timbers, bring a sense of drama and modernity.
The scheme fosters a social atmosphere through thoughtful spatial planning and visible food theatre, honouring the architectural legacy and infusing it with the contemporary elegance and warmth of the brand’s DNA, creating a dynamic dining experience that celebrates coming together to share a love for food, wine and friends.
