Macarena lends an urban femininity to the traditional Spanish tapas dining experience, all in the heart of downtown Palo Alto
The space was transformed the former Michelin
Guide recognized Bird Dog space into an ode to the Spanish dancer Macarena and all of the seductive and mysterious qualities she embodies. Inspired by camerinos, the feminine vanity areas
found in theatrical dressing rooms, old world charm and elegance was brought into the restaurant's interior. With a deep appreciation for classical architectural forms and elements of
crown molding and V groove mirrored paneled cabinets, the design was softened through the incorporation of wavy lines, fringes and curves. Elements drawn from the famous San Sebastián born sculptor Eduardo Chillida bring modern clean lines and a subtle masculinity to the otherwise feminine-driven space. Low level accent lighting and lush plants provide warmth and verdant shelter, creating a natural landscape juxtaposed with the building’s concrete structural elements. Guests are greeted by an intimate bar leading into the main dining room reminiscent of a casual, yet lively bistro complete with velvet banquettes.
