Revitalizing Modernism | Mercure Bangkok Surawong

This renovation transforms a former office building into a contemporary hotel, introducing an entirely new façade that draws inspiration from the area's mid-century modernist character. On a compact site with no driveway, the service core was elevated above the parking to preserve an open, pedestrian-friendly ground level that reconnects with the street.

The new façade features sculpted volumes and staggered balconies, referencing modernist geometry in a refreshed, contemporary form. White cement precast panels were chosen for their subtly textured, slightly rustic surface, offering a material presence that resonates with the aging elegance of neighboring buildings, while clearly marking the intervention as new.

Metallic composite panels at the lobby and rooftop bar bring restrained contrast, adding a modern accent without overpowering the composition. The result is a sensitive urban renewal—rooted in place, responsive to context, and confident in its reinterpretation of the past.
