Southwand House is located in Costa Navarino in Messinia, one of the Mediterranean’s most sustainably driven destinations. Designed as a holiday escape for a Northern European family, it sits within Navarino Dunes, surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees, overlooking the Ionian Sea. The name, “Southwand,” refers to the Northern European habit of enjoying rare sunny days by resting against a south-facing wall.
The house blends the heritage of Messinian stone tower-houses with Costa Navarino’s architectural character. To reflect the family’s active lifestyle, the design extends indoor living into outdoor spaces, celebrating summer living.
Inspired by local folk architecture—stone volumes, courtyards, passages—we created modules that shape varied spaces on one or two levels. Stone from nearby quarries frames the units, while white concrete slabs and aluminium glazing add clarity and lightness.
A central spine separates social and private spaces while keeping views open. Each interior space has an outdoor counterpart, showing that living essentials can be lived al fresco. Southwand House embodies an active, harmonious way of living with nature.
