Our challenge was to revitalise and give an identity to an under-used area on the 39th floor of Heron Tower. Historically the floor had lacked direction and purpose- acting more as a guide to lost customers seeking either Sushisamba on Lvl 38 or Duck & Waffle on Lvl 40.
We wanted to bring a residential vibe to the new Samba Room- a more luxurious, cossetted experience to the Sushisamba restaurant on the floor below. We drew inspiration from mid-century Brazilian residential interiors plus a full saturation of the iconic Sushisamba orange colour.
We worked with a monochrome palette, balancing timbers such as palm woods and sucupira that are indigenous to South America, with a strong commitment to the brand's orange colour being expressed through applications such as mohairs and copper mirrors to warm and soften the space.
The big feature was the in the PDR/cocktail lounge, requiring a flexible space and lacking storage, we designed a 30 person dining table that when not in use, retracted into the ceiling to allow the room to transform into a cocktail lounge. Then, when a PDR set up was required the table would lower on an electric winch to rest upon the cocktail tables below.
