Gongu Izakaya is a modern interpretation of Japanese dining culture set within historical walls of Riga. Our vision was a quiet, deliberate, gentle mix of Japanese classic design elements - woven into the historic fabric of the space and modern context. Recognizable, but not loud.

The project’s challenge was to merge two powerful identities: the protected 18th-century brick architecture of central Riga and the dynamic spirit of a modern Japanese izakaya. Working within a heritage-listed building imposed strict limits, with no structural changes, minimal wall intervention.

Original 18th-century brick walls and arches were preserved as a living backdrop, while new elements introduced rhythm and warmth without overpowering the structure. Timber grids bring calm and order, shoji screens transform light into intimacy, and torii-inspired portals echo Japanese symbolism. Arches create smooth transitions between spaces, inviting guests to explore and connect with the atmosphere.

Most of the custom-made furniture and decorative lighting were produced in Ukraine, reflecting the studio’s roots and its desire to make Ukrainian design and craftsmanship known worldwide.
