Located on the tropical island of Koh Samui, the brief called for a luxurious 7-bedroom villa, set on a stunning sunset, beach front setting, with views to the neighbouring islands. The natural vegetation from the water up to the rear of the 90m long site transitions from lagoon to reef, to mangrove, to beach, to rocky shores, to grass and eventually to low lying tropical vegetation, sprinkled with mature coconut trees all across. Our landscape concept mimics these varying micro zones of nature. The villa cascades down the gently sloping, linear site, taking on the tidal layering of the beachfront location. A rich stone wall, using local granite, divides the private and public aspects of the villa, reminiscent of a walled garden. This architectural wall leads visitors from the entry all the way down to the sea facing pool and is utilized to conceal back of house areas, as well as more private and intimate space such as the massage sala, indoor cinema, sauna and pool shower. The pavilions are treated as floating steel roofs. Composite timber soffits and extensive use of frameless glazing below all aid to connect the interiors with the landscape beyond, enriching the spaciousness.
